Chapter 9

“Dr. Campbell?” Sara Keen said as she leaned around the corner of the office door. She glanced in to see how busy Marki looked. She’d been Dr. Marki Campbell’s secretary for less than a year and during that time knew the good doctor’s temperament could be mercurial. Not often and never personal, but occasionally Dr. Campbell’s temperament was unpredictable, and Sara didn’t want to be on the wrong end of the mercury.

“Yes, Sara,” came the distracted response as Marki walked along shuffling papers into separate neat stacks on a table.

“Dr. Campbell, while you were in class this morning a detective called and wanted to make an appointment.”

“And?” Marki removed her loose-fitting jacket and gathered her matching skirt underneath her as she sat down in her chair. The bright green, long-sleeve blouse was warm enough in the steam-heated office. Marki preferred steam heat for its soothing effect on contemporary overstressed respiratory systems. However, the steam mechanisms were not quick to respond to abrupt weather changes. The lingering coolness of the late-March nights tended to maintain a heat in the building. The pent-up steam could only be alleviated by opening windows or disrobing as much as decorum might allow.

“I told her you had office hours from eleven to one o’clock today. She said she’d be here by eleven. Was that all right?” Sara fussed with her blouse trying to straighten the bunching up at her waist. The hours of sitting and typing sometimes had a tendency to dishevel her.

“That’ll be fine. It’s almost eleven now, so give me a few minutes to make sense out of these tests before you show her in.” Marki returned to the stacks of papers on her desk as Sara turned to leave.

“Wait. Just who am I waiting for, and why?” Marki remembered to ask before Sara vanished around the corner.

Sara fumbled in her mind for the name. “A Detective North with the Kansas City, Missouri, police department. She wasn’t very forthcoming regarding the reason. She did mention it had something to do with a case she was working on. You know how mysterious detectives can be,” Sara asserted.

“No, not really,” Marki responded. North, North? The name had the ring of familiarity to Marki. Then it hit her. Tru North? The woman she’d sweetly accosted at the bar? The woman she’d been fantasizing about? Was the good goddess granting a wish and bringing Tru to her?

“They’re always mysterious on TV,” Sara insisted.

“True to form. Is that what you’re saying?” Marki smiled lightly at Sara.

“You’ll have to tell me after you’ve talked to her,” Sara suggested.

“Fine. Give me a few minutes and I’ll let you know when to show her in. Okay?”

“All right.”

Well, thought Marki, this could turn out to be an unexpected and wonderful surprise. She turned toward one of the two windows in her office and grinned roguishly out at the view.

Marki Campbell had been given the office two years ago when she was hired as the chair for the psychology department at the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
